This Newsletter Makes ‘Social Impact Easy For Busy People’
With so many complicated facts and statistics out there about climate change, it can be difficult to synthesise the information and come away with a clear understanding of what you can do to help enact positive change. To help inform people about climate change in a simple, digestible way, Nivi Achanta founded Soapbox Project.
“Soapbox Project is a content-supported platform where people can find bite-sized actions and a community to participate with,” Achanta tells CircleAround. It’s meant to help people feel more informed about climate change and hopefully empowered to take action.
“I really wanted to get involved in fighting climate change, but I had no idea where to start,” she explains. “My efforts would always lead me down hours-long internet rabbit holes, and it wasn’t a productive way to spend my time because I’d never actually do anything after my research had ended.”
People can interact with Soapbox Project through their social media platforms and through in-person meetups in select cities. But their primary way of disseminating information is through a weekly newsletter that highlights a specific topic related to a social justice or climate change issue. The newsletter covers one topic every month, takes only a few minutes to read, and provides subscribers with a base for exploring topics further.
The first week of the month, subscribers receive facts from vetted sources along with supplementary articles as a general overview of the topic of the month. The second week includes a link to a podcast or video, and the third week includes three actions readers can take, like donating to a charity or voting on local policy. Week four provides subscribers with reader responses, interviews with experts, or bonus material to expand and look back on the topic as a whole.
Previous topics have included, “Is Climate Change Causing Extreme Weather?” “What Does Bitcoin Have to Do WIth Climate Change?” and “What is Fast Fashion and How Can You Fight It?”
Over 4,000 people actively read Soapbox Project’s newsletter. “The emails I get from readers and users keep me going and help me validate that this journey is worth taking,” Achanta says.
As a result of so many readers connecting with Achanta’s startup, she knew she had the potential to make Soapbox Project even bigger. The company has developed a way for readers to connect in an online community where they can discuss newsletters, learn about new topics, or just get to know each other.
There is also a membership portal for local chapters of Soapbox Project located in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and Bristol in the United Kingdom. Members have access to exclusive Soapbox Project sponsored events, discounts on sustainable products in their community, and a social impact/sustainability job board. Members also like to get together casually to participate in local sustainability events.
“I went from working on making rich people richer to executing on my own vision, which is to make social impact easy for busy people,” Achanta states. As her community grows, she is looking to expand into more cities.
