Cruising Through Colorado: Your Guide to The Ultimate Road Trip
There is something about summer that makes you want to cruise down an open road with your closest girlfriends as you take in the sights and blast your favorite tunes. One of the best road trip destinations in the country is Colorado. This serene and mountainous state is a dream for those who love the great outdoors. Whether you’re looking to spend your time camping and hiking, or simply unwinding and restoring in nature, planning a road trip through Colorado with your girls should be at the top of your travel bucket list. However, there are few tips and tricks you should know before you start planning your visit.
First and foremost, you need to figure out what vehicle you will be using for your road trip. If you live within a reasonable distance of your desired destination and you feel that your car is capable of lasting through a road trip then taking your own car can save you some money and stress. However, if you’re not confident in your car’s ability to stay safe on the road, or if you live too far and will be flying into Colorado or a nearby area before beginning your trip, then renting a car is going to be the best option for you. If you do end up using a rental, be sure to get an SUV with either four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive to ensure that you can make it through any rough terrain or weather that you may encounter.
Second, make sure you have your hotel or Airbnb accommodations in order. If you plan to stay in one area of Colorado, then this part shouldn’t be too difficult, as you can book one place for the entirety of your stay. However, if you plan to stop through several different cities and cover a larger ground of exploration, save yourself some time by mapping out exactly where you will be and when so that your accommodations can be set and ready for you. Even if you plan to camp, several camping sites require reservations and can often fill up fast, so it’s important to be as proactive as possible, especially in the summertime. Also, it’s best to split your time in the car on the way to your first destination into two days so you can catch up on some sleep before getting behind the wheel, determine your halfway point, and research motels in the area. Even if you need a Motel 6 for the night, it might be smart to prebook in advance simply out of an abundance of caution.
Third, ensure that you have enough water and snacks for the road. No one wants to get hangry while on their way to a fun vacation, especially with their best girlfriends. Before heading out, stock up on some of your favorite protein bars, chips, and other nonperishables to tide you over while on the road. Of course, you can always stop at a local restaurant or fast-food joint on the way; just try to include those potential stops into your travel time while mapping out your trip.
Finally, make sure that any and all insurance and roadside service accounts are up to date and active. Safety should be at the top of your priority list when traveling, especially on a road trip. In addition to making sure that you have full access to necessary emergency services, it’s not a bad idea to share your location with a family member or friend who is not on the trip, in case you run into trouble or end up lost. Though Colorado is insanely beautiful, it is also full of spotty cellphone service and extremely long and remote stretches of land.
While the best road trips often include multiple stops and adventures, it is impossible to see everything in one trip. In order to help you narrow down which places to visit, keep the following suggestions in mind:
- Aspen: If you and your friends want to immerse yourselves in both nature and luxury, then Aspen should be at the top of your Colorado must-see list.
- Vail: Like Aspen, Vail offers visitors the chance to indulge in the finer things while still remaining close to nature. Communities like Beaver Creek are notoriously nice and fancy, but they’re still super fun to stop by for dinner or drinks.
- Denver: If you want to find some city among the mountains, Denver is a hip and cool place that will provide you and your girlfriends with an array of fun activities.
- Durango: Durango is a much smaller, more laid-back part of Colorado. It is surrounded by stunning lakes and mountains, making it a great destination for camping and outdoor exploration.
