From Girl Scout to CEO: Rocking the World of SEO Optimization

For many business owners — especially those just starting out — optimizing content for Google is an essential part of getting their brand or service noticed. This is known as search engine optimization (SEO), and Girl Scout alum and business owner Janet Driscoll Miller is an expert in it. In fact, her business, Marketing Mojo, is a digital marketing agency that provides SEO and digital advertising services on platforms such as Google and Facebook. We caught up with Miller to learn more about her business and how being a Girl Scout helped her get to where she is today. 

Circle Around: When did you first know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

Janet Driscoll Miller: After many years of working inside of companies as a digital marketer and working with outside agencies, I realized that I could do the work — and likely do it better and provide better customer service at a better price. So I decided to give it a go, and I'm still going strong after 16 years.

CA: Which of the Girl Scout traits have carried over into your adult life and business?

JM: In my line of work, honesty and integrity are incredibly important. In SEO, there are many conflicting views on how to optimize a website for search engines, and in some cases, there is information that is completely wrong or misleading. In other cases, some SEO practitioners promote actions that would be considered questionable or negative by search engines like Google. Good customer service is also a key to any service-based business like mine. Keeping customers content and helping them to see the value of our work is critical.

CA: Imagining that your professional life is a continuation of the Girl Scout program, what professional award/recognition ("badge") have you been the most proud to earn?

JM: I credit Girl Scouts with helping me to build my confidence from an early age. By providing me as a young girl with opportunities to lead others, it helped me develop my own leadership skills, which help me to this day. In particular, being a camp youth staff member was a fantastic hands-on opportunity to lead others and practice those skills.Two years ago, I was honored by the girls in my troop with the Volunteer of Excellence award. I'm so incredibly proud of this award as it was given to me by my own girls in my troop, and it validates that they appreciate the experience we share. I know that the work we do together is affecting them now and into their futures.

CA: This year marks Girl Scouts' 110th anniversary. Can you share what the 110th anniversary means to you?

JM: I started as a leader with my oldest daughter in the same year as the 100th anniversary, so this year also marks my 10th year as a Girl Scout leader. I’m so grateful that this powerful organization has transformed girls for so long, but I am concerned about our future. In almost all youth organizations, we’re seeing declining membership. I think all of us need to challenge ourselves with how we can ensure that the organization thrives for another 110 years, and ultimately that comes down to keeping girls involved in Girl Scouting. 

The challenge, I find, is adult involvement. For many years I helped with our local membership, and we had a waitlist of more than 300 girls who wanted to join, but there weren’t enough adult volunteers to be leaders and form troops. As Girl Scout alums, if we love this organization and want to see it continue, it’s up to us to ensure girls have troops and other pathways to be in Girl Scouts. I challenge all of my Girl Scout alum sisters to help solve that membership challenge so we can ensure that future generations are afforded the great opportunities that Girl Scouting has brought us.

CA: How did being a Girl Scout shape you as a female business owner?

JM: Honestly, the confidence and leadership skills that Girl Scouts instilled in me as a girl really helped me to take the leap to become an entrepreneur. When I was a girl, there were not nearly as many business-focused badges as we have today, but the core Girl Scout program of building leadership skills helped me to have that confidence to step out and become a leader of my own in business.

The Bottom Line

Miller’s dedication and hard work has helped get her to where she is today. Having experience with the Girl Scouts also helped her build a strong foundation of leadership and confidence. Now that Miller is a business owner and parent of a Girl Scout herself, she can continue passing down the values she’s learned.
