New Year, New You
Motivating Yourself to Set 2022 Goals
The motivational speaker Les Brown says, “You either have reasons or results. The only thing that counts is results, and results don’t lie.” Friendly reminder: The new year is just around the corner. After the New Year’s celebrations are all said and done, it’s time to look at the calendar and plan the year ahead. That means it’s making us all think about not only resolutions, but our top goals for 2022. Whether they’re financial goals, career ambitions, or simply cleaning out your closet, here are tips to help you get off your butt and make them happen in the new year.
There’s nothing less inspiring than coming up with goals that you know you can achieve. It's far more fun to pick something seemingly impossible and try to get as close as you can to it. Why not? You only live once, so you might as well reach for the highest goals imaginable, because they could very well come true. The only caveat with this is to keep it simple. If you’re laser-focused on any goal — no matter the size — it’ll be easier to achieve. Aim for the stars.
2Come Up With a Plan
Anyone can write up a to-do list, but it takes far more effort to come up with an actionable plan that makes goals happen. First, write your to-do list for 2022. Then focus on each one in order of priority: Who can help you achieve these goals? Is there a friend you can ask? A contact through work? A book you’ve been meaning to read, which could be an educational resource? Be resourceful. How can you really make this happen?
Sometimes the hardest part is taking the first step, which can be intimidating. But once you get the ball rolling, it's easier to keep it rolling and build on the steps necessary to meet your goals. Don’t settle!
3Talk to an Adviser
An adviser could be many things — a trusted friend, a colleague, a financial adviser, or a career coach. Whatever form it takes for you, the main thing you should ask is: “Is it possible?” Set up meetings in early January with everyone who can offer insight into your goal list. Draw up a business plan and get some feedback. Be sure to talk to your accountant, as they can also help you specifically with your financial goals. Having a year-end tax-planning meeting with your accountant, for example, can help you better understand what your year looked like, so you can learn from your mistakes. Advisers can help guide you toward next steps in each quarter of 2022, making your financial goals a reality.
4Hold Yourself Accountable
Should you be knocking off your goals effortlessly each and every month? It's easier said than done. Staying on track, especially when there are plenty of distractions in our world, is not easy. Keep yourself accountable. If that’s a weak spot, have someone keep you accountable if you cannot do it yourself.
You have to stay committed to make your dreams come true; the same goes for your goals. That means living your life in the present and not worrying about the past or the future. Worry will block you from taking the necessary steps to making your goals your reality.
5Take Your Life to the Next Level
As long as you’re on the way to fulfilling your goals, you will be happy because you know you’re on the right path. When you’re living life committed to your goals, you’re stepping it up. Always remember: “This year will be better than last year.” Keep aiming higher. The only competition is yourself, so be prepared to outdo yourself in 2022. As Tony Robbins said: “Goal setting is the secret to a compelling future.”
