Tips for Building Your Child’s Confidence
Having self-confidence is crucial for success. It helps lay the groundwork to take on whatever life throws our way — the good and the not-so-good. That’s why working on self-confidence from a very young age is crucial. Helping your child find self-confidence is imperative for their growth and is more easily accomplished with deliberate actions.
Helping Kids Feel Confident Matters
“When children feel confident and secure, they're more likely to succeed in school and achieve personal goals. As they age, they learn to confront problems and resist peer pressure,” according to experts at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. “More importantly, having a positive self-image helps a child feel happy and capable of maintaining personal relationships.”
How To Build a Child’s Confidence
There are many causes of low self-esteem, including bullying, suffering trauma during a developmental time, and struggling academically. Parental behaviors and attitudes also have a huge impact. The hospital’s website suggests that it’s important to let children know they are unconditionally loved and to find ways to show and demonstrate it. Other ways to build confidence include assigning tasks that allow children to develop and feel confident in their skills.
KidsHealth.org also has an abundance of solid suggestions for how you can set your child up for a happy, healthy life. They implore parents to praise the effort that children make. They should always be encouraged. Do not overpraise, says the site. Children have their intuitive senses, and empty praises will have no value to a child.
