Having a baby will change your life in many different ways, including how you return to work after maternity leave. Whether you’ve been gone for a few weeks or several months, returning to your job can be a very stressful and anxiety-inducing time as you leave your newborn to resume deadline-laden job responsibilities.

There Are Many Changes To Contend With

Changes in your hormones will affect your emotional responses to almost everything. On top of that, you may also be experiencing guilt for feeling like you’ve left your baby too soon. For many mothers, there is also the challenge of finding safe and affordable childcare. All of these thoughts may affect how you function in the workplace. In a 2019 Harvard Business Review article, Daisy Wademan Dowling, founder and CEO of consulting firm Workparent, suggests having candid conversations with your boss about the adjustments you’re experiencing.

Lean on Your Support Network

Green Child magazine offers tips for how to handle your changing range of emotions: “Know who you can count on when you’re feeling at your lowest. Whether it’s a friend you can call anytime or a work buddy who will step out and get some air with you when you need it,” according to the magazine.

For moms who breastfeed, it’s crucial to discuss with your HR team the provisions that are available for nursing moms at your company.
