What Bruce Lee Taught Me About Parenting

Having children can be a blessing, but many never say what that blessing is. My daughter, Kayla, taught me how to flow like water.

Bruce Lee said it best: “Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless like water. When you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you put water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can flow, or it can crash. Be water.” My interpretation: Learning to adjust can help matters move easier.

Every year, my daughter’s day care had a costume parade. Kids would dress up, and parents would take pictures. One year, it slipped my mind. As children normally do when adults forget, they remind you. I can tell Kayla noticed I forgot and said, “Don’t worry, you’ll figure it out.”

My Daughter Was the Calming Influence on Me

Saturday morning came, and she needed a costume for Monday. We did our morning routine and went shopping. Six stores later, nothing. I began to fidget in the car. Kayla crossed her little ankles, pulled her shoulders to her ears, smiled, and said, “It just has to fit.” That’s when I remembered she had a white long-sleeve shirt, leggings, and a sunflower headband. I drove to the nearest craft store and bought a box of green dye to color her whites green, and I turned my old wicker basket into a flower pot I held up with an old ribbon to complete her look.

Monday morning came, and she was thrilled to put her costume on. Kayla was the cutest sunflower you ever saw. It all happened because she was the calm that kept my thoughts flowing like a river and not a waterfall.
