10 Family-Friendly Flatbread Ideas

Summer is (still) here and the living is easy — or at least we’d like it to be. This summer has been quite a bit different and we’re finding ourselves at home much more. But while staying in place means cooking more, figuring out recipes that are both budget-friendly and full of flavor doesn’t have to be a daunting task.

A favorite, inexpensive go-to dinner for me is flatbread. Topped with whatever flavors I’m currently craving, I often make it using whatever is in my fridge. It’s a tip I picked up from a friend who is known to whip this up as a fun snack whenever I pop over for an unannounced visit. 

This meal is perfect for dining solo or feeding various family members who may have different tastes. It’s a create your own adventure dinner that's always a crowd-pleaser and is low-maintenance enough that the clean up is simple. It’s also a great dinner that’s adaptable to different dietary restrictions. Lately, I’ve been particularly fond of naan as my base. It’s easy to make as well as inexpensive to buy. For those who want to make their own in less than 30 minutes, this is a great recipe to start. 

You can go basic with red sauce, cheese, and your favorite pizza toppings on flatbread or it can be made with more of a summery twist. I personally like to use hummus or a spinach dip as my “sauce,” along with whatever cheese I happen to have on hand, and then top it with fun summer veggies, like squash or cucumber, peppers, etc.

  1. Mediterranean Flatbread: Greek-yogurt base topped with feta, cucumber, olives, red onion, artichoke, and olive oil drizzle
  2. BBQ Chicken Flatbread: BBQ-sauce base topped with shredded chicken, red onions, cheddar jack cheese, and cilantro
  3. Chicken Ranch Flatbread: Ranch-dressing base topped with shredded chicken, bacon, corn, and mozzarella
  4. Smoked Salmon Flatbread: Cream-cheese base topped with smoked salmon, red onion, and capers
  5. Summer Squash Flatbread: Hummus base topped with squash, corn, bacon, roasted red pepper, pepper jack cheese, and olive oil drizzle
  6. Classic Pepperoni Flatbread: Tomato-sauce base topped with mozzarella, pepperoni, and basil
  7. Arugula and Prosciutto Flatbread: Greek-yogurt base topped with figs, arugula, prosciutto, walnuts, and drizzled honey
  8. Summer Salad Flatbread: Ricotta base topped with grilled peaches, spinach, mozzarella, and drizzled balsamic
  9. Shrimp Scampi Flatbread: Olive-oil base topped with sautéed buttery shrimp, mozzarella, garlic, red pepper flakes, and lemon zest
  10. Cheeseburger Flatbread: Cheese-sauce base topped with seasoned ground beef, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and drizzled with ketchup and mustard

The possibilities are really endless. Consider using leftover proteins and work-around flavors that you think would complement them. Once assembled, pop it in the oven at 350 degrees (or even on the grill) just long enough to warm it all the way through or to get the cheese to melt. That’s it. Dinner is ready — in no time flat.
