5 Self-Help Tips to Lift You Through the Pandemic

The pandemic has put all of us in a miserable space. Balancing work and home life doesn't leave much breathing space these days. So, if you feel stressed or overwhelmed with your responsibilities, take a step back to clear your headspace and follow these five self-help tips to uplift yourself:

1. Find Your Ikigai

Ikigai, pronounced as "ick-ee-guy," is a Japanese concept that roughly translates to "the happiness of always being busy." Given how life has become monotonous and stale, it is necessary to adapt and pursue new passions with a purpose.

Revitalize your workout routine, learn a new recipe, or start a remote venture; do something that creatively engages you and makes you happy. For me, writing is a form of self-care, which is why I started writing more ever since the lockdown began. It fulfills me!

2. Declutter Your Life

In her book Yes, Please, Amy Poehler writes about the importance of shaking one's life through a sieve to re-focus on all the good stuff and get rid of everything else. Use this time as an opportunity to identify areas in your life that don't make you happy.

It could include blocking toxic people, switching jobs, spring cleaning your email accounts, and even letting go of bad eating habits. Re-organize your life, however you like! Trust me — you will feel lighter and more positive.

3. Put Your Best Foot Forward (at Work)

Coronavirus has led to a change in the attitude toward work and decreased productivity. So don't just focus on your day-to-day tasks; instead create new opportunities for yourself at work where you can add value.

For example, identify your peers or employees who are struggling to cope in this environment and act as their sounding board to provide advice. Being there is a way to demonstrate your strengths and build a trusting relationship with your team.

Alternatively, volunteer for projects and become a part of online committees that can potentially bring the spotlight on you and make you feel appreciated.

4. Think Powerful Thoughts

I know this is a fundamental tip, but trust me, it works. In her book You Can Heal Your Life, Louise Hay writes, "The only thing we are ever dealing with is a thought, and a thought can be changed." Therefore, be mindful of your words.

Saying "I love my life," "I am beautiful," or "I am successful" can lead to miracles! It might feel weird at first, but your brain will soon soak up the good things you keep telling yourself and turn those thoughts in a happier direction.

I have created a vision board with all my favorite quotes, dreams, and aspirations. It's the reason I get out of bed and get to work.

5. Improve Your Sleep Hygiene

Sleep is crucial at this time. It lowers blood pressure, uplifts the mood, and de-stresses both mind and body. Create a sleep schedule. With no late-night social obligations, getting to bed "on time" is more realistic now. Take advantage of that.

Also, limit your screen time at night. Leave your phone in another room to not be tempted to scroll through your Instagram feed at 2 am. Ever since I started doing that, my eyes are better rested, and my mornings are no longer groggy. You should try it, too!

I hope these tips offer you respite from the current scenario, ignite a passion for the things you love, and give you ideas about navigating through life more constructively. Stay positive — be happy.
