There’s one thing over the years that has truly changed my perspective on life for the better and that is the power of a random act of kindness. While being kind is simple, it can have a much stronger significance than you might expect.
With World Kindness Day, I’m reminded of how important it is to be kind to others in this world, and most importantly, to be kind to yourself. Here’s a story of how a simple random act of kindness changed my outlook for the better, with the hope that it encourages you to do something kind for someone else today.
My college years were full of immense personal growth, but they were also filled with a lot of ups and downs. I’ve always been someone who strived for perfection as well as had a hard time dealing with change. Navigating newfound independence and adjusting to college life away from my family was an entirely new experience for me, and it was something I felt I would never get used to. (Spoiler alert: I did, and I have grown so much as a person from the experience.)
On a day when I was feeling pretty low, I had invited my friend to go to the grocery store with me so that I could pick up a few goodies for an upcoming club meeting. I grabbed what I needed and stepped into the checkout line with my friend.
We were behind a woman who was waiting as the cashier scanned her stuff when she turned around and asked my friend and me what we were getting. I told her that the contents of my basket was it and she responded, “I’ll get it for you.” My face instantly lit up. In that very moment, all of the sadness and other things on my mind completely disappeared. I was so surprised that this woman so kindly and easily offered to pay for my groceries, but she wasn’t finished.
She then proceeded to ask the same question to the woman behind us, who had significantly more groceries than I did, and told the cashier that she would pay for her groceries, too.
This moment of kindness became one of my favorite memories during college and my young adulthood. It was a simple act, yet it made such a positive impact on my day. I remember being so excited to tell my friends and family about how amazing that moment was and how it made me feel. I also remember thinking, if more people did a random act of kindness like this, imagine what kind of world this would be.
Whether we see it or not, everyone is going through a personal battle. Being kind is something that can bring so many of us together. To do something kind for someone else could be the very reminder they need to feel as though everything will be just fine. That moment is one that I will always remember and has been my fuel to make sure to do something kind for someone else each day. Happy World Kindness Day!
