Dr. Anthony Fauci has some good news for parents: Children can go trick-or-treating again thanks to rising vaccination rates around the country.

The nation’s top infectious disease expert appeared on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday and said that he supports kids getting “out there” and enjoying Halloween.

“I think that particularly if you’re vaccinated, you can get out there. You’re outdoors for the most part ― at least when my children were out there doing trick-or-treating ― and enjoy it. I mean, this is a time that children love. It’s a very important part of the year for children,” he said.

Fauci went on to implore those who are unvaccinated to consider getting vaccinated ahead of the holiday season as it’s a “good time to reflect on why it’s important to get vaccinated.” He also added: “But go out there and enjoy Halloween as well as the other holidays that will be coming up.”

Notably, vaccines have only been authorized for children over the age of 12; those younger than 12 have not been approved for vaccination as per the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Later this month, the FDA hopes to work with Pfizer to “amend its emergency use authorization to allow the use of its COVID-19 vaccine in children 5 through 11 years of age.”

As per the Centers for Disease Control, cases of COVID-19 as well as hospitalizations and deaths have been declining in many parts of the country. Most recently, the seven-day moving average of daily new cases (95,448) decreased 11.6% compared with the previous seven-day moving average (107,953).

In the midst of that, many Americans have been wondering when they could plan to remove their masks when indoors. To that, Fauci says he wants case numbers to drop below 10,000 per day.

“But we have to just be careful that we don’t prematurely declare victory in many respects. We still have around 68 million people who are eligible to be vaccinated that have not yet gotten vaccinated,” he said.  “And even those who have been vaccinated, I mean, you want to look forward to holiday seasons and spending time with your family and doing those sorts of things, but don’t just throw your hands up and say it’s all over.”
