Mj Rodriguez Becomes First Trans Actor To Take Home Golden Globe
Golden Globes history has been made: Mj Rodriguez just became the first transgender actor to take home one of the statues.
On Sunday, actress Michaela Jaé “Mj” Rodriguez won the Golden Globe for best actress in a TV drama for her role as house mother and nurse Blanca on Pose. While this year’s ceremony was not telecast, the win was still a huge accomplishment as it also marked the first time the FX series, which premiered in 2018, has won a Golden Globe.
Of her win, Rodriguez took to Instagram to celebrate the momentous occasion and thanked her followers and fans.
“This is the door that is going to open the door for many more young talented individuals. They will see that it is more than possible. "
“This is the door that is going to open the door for many more young talented individuals. They will see that it is more than possible. She also talked about the exciting moment in an Instagram Live and even gave an acceptance speech: "I've got to take this moment to say all of this because I couldn't really say all of it in a post. Number 1 thank you Golden Globes, this is for the LGBTQAI, Black, Latina, Asian [communities], the many multi beautiful colors of the rainbow around the freakin' world. This is not just for me, this is for y'all. This is the door that opens for y'all. Rodriguez has been a trailblazer for the trans community since she started on the show and made history last year when she became the first trans performer to garner an Emmy nomination in a lead acting category.
Prior to Rodriguez being acknowledged, other stars of Pose have been vocal about various awards shows snubbing their series. In 2020, Indya Moore — who plays Angel Evangelista — said in a tweet that has since been deleted: “Something abt trans ppl not being honored on a show abt trans ppl who created a culture to honor ourselves bc the world doesn’t. Let’s call it cognitive cissonance.”
