Tennis great Naomi Osaka is volleying to be part of your skincare routine.
The 23-year-old announced the launch of her skincare line KINLÒ this week, which is specifically geared towards "[protecting and rejuvenating] people of color and darker skin tones," as per a video on KINLÒ's Instagram page.
Osaka said in an interview with Business of Fashion
that "what drew me towards this project is having memories of being a kid and not knowing how to protect my skin." She added that she only started wearing sunscreen herself recently.
A 2018 survey by the Skin Cancer Foundation
found that 63 percent of African Americans have never used sunscreen products despite being just as susceptible to skin cancer as people with lighter skin tones.
While the exact release date for Osaka's collection is unknown, she told Business of Fashion that she'll be offering an SPF 40 tinted sunscreen, lip balm, body spray, eye cream, and an SPF 50 Tinted Face Lotion. She also noted that, unlike other sunscreens, KINLÒ's products will not have a white cast to them when used on melanated skin and that the products are made to last during physical activity; the collection was crafted with the help of dermatologist Dr. Naana Boakye.
"This is a public health need. I used to tell people that I didn't need to wear sunscreen — but even if you have melanin, you need to take care of your skin, and I am passionate about that," she said.
On her personal Instagram page, Osaka told fans that she "never thought I would ever start my own company" but is "super excited about launching KINLÒ
"I hope these products can help a lot of people and potentially save lives because I really feel that we aren’t protecting ourselves as much as we could," she wrote.
