Overnight Oats Make the Perfect Grab & Go Breakfast

Turn your favorite seasonal fruit into easy overnight oatmeal all summer long. This healthy overnight oats recipe is the perfect grab-and-go breakfast — you can enjoy these oats absolutely anywhere. Overnight oats are a great make-ahead meal: prep all ingredients the night before, let the oats sit overnight in the fridge, and they are ready to enjoy the next morning. This recipe is the customizable “no cook” breakfast you need in your weekday repertoire.
For anyone who believes there’s no time for breakfast in the morning, overnight oats are here to change your mind. They’re the perfect morning meal to grab on your way out the door. Thick and hearty oats are mixed with milk or yogurt of your choice, loaded with your favorite ripe fruit in season, and topped with nuts or seeds for crunch. Make these oats with freshly picked strawberries, peaches, melon, plums, or apples. Our Massachusetts property is lined with wild blueberry shrubs, so when I pick a handful of berries each day in the summer months, I can toss them right into this overnight oats recipe to enjoy the next day. Whatever seasonal fruit strikes your fancy at the farmers market, cut it, slice it, and load it in.
I’ve found that the best storage containers for taking this breakfast on the go are also the simplest: mason jars. I prefer the wide-mouth pint jars as I can get my spoon all the way to the bottom without making a mess. You can certainly use a regular mouth jar, but I find the extra half inch or so of the wide mouth rims allow you to really dig in and get to the bottom of the jar easier. Mason jars are also airtight when sealed correctly, so you can throw a jar into your purse or backpack without any worries of spillage.
Think of this recipe as a blueprint. The beauty of these oats is that they are customizable, and you can add any fruit combinations you love. I gave a few of my favorite suggestions below, and let me tell you that apple and mango go amazingly well together. Feel free to get creative and mix up the flavors based on what you or your family enjoy. This is a great way to get picky eaters to try new fruits, too. Or swap up the nuts and seeds based on the fruit. I love pairing walnuts with my apples and pepitas with berries for a little extra crunch. The possibilities are deliciously endless.
No-Cook Overnight Oats Recipe

- 2 cups fruit (I like to use the following combinations: apple and mango; banana and blueberry; peach and strawberry … or be your own mixologist with any fruit combination you love)
- 2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats or sprouted oats, not quick oats
- 1 cup milk of choice, can be plant-based
- 1 cup plain unsweetened yogurt of choice, can also be plant-based
- 2 tablespoons maple or agave syrup
- ¼ cup orange juice
- ½ cup nuts or seeds of choice
Add all ingredients to a large mixing bowl. Mix well to combine, and divide the oatmeal equally into four wide mouth pint mason jars. Seal lids and refrigerate.
Allow jars to refrigerate for 8 hours overnight and enjoy the oats cold the next morning. These oats will keep in an airtight container for two days.
- Oats are naturally gluten-free, but if you cannot eat gluten, check the label to make sure you oats are certified gluten-free. One Degree Organics has fantastic sprouted oats that are both organic and gluten-free that I always use.
- To make these oats vegan, use a plant-based milk like almond milk, coconut milk, or oat milk, and make sure to use a dairy-free yogurt.
- To make this recipe nut-free, choose a nut-free milk and use seeds instead of nuts.
