How to Make a Smoothie — and Save Money
I have a confession to make: I’m a wellness professional and I hate making smoothies.
That’s right. I do not enjoy the slicing, the dicing, the cleanup… None of it. But I do love the outcome — brightly colored, blended beverages chock-full of nutrients. So, I subscribed to a pre-made smoothie service that dropped off cups full of pre-diced, pre-measured smoothie ingredients.
Voila! Now I can have my smoothies with literally the press of a button. Only, it turns out this concept isn’t as great as I thought it would be, either.
As soon as I opened the box, I was disheartened. There was so much plastic; so much styrofoam. And, it was expensive! Together, those two factors encouraged me to up the ante on my smoothie game and learn how to DIY my healthy smoothies in a way that felt quick and easy.
The Key: Smoothie Pre-Portioning
Here’s the secret: Pre-portioning.
Truly, it’s that simple. As I was fiddling around with the pre-made smoothies I ordered, I wondered, “If they can do this, why can’t I?”
And that’s when I started using the following protocol to become a master DIY-er of smoothies:
- Purchase fruit and vegetables in bulk.
- Chop and dice all in the same session.
- Portion into small, reusable food containers (as much as you want in a single smoothie).
- Pop in the freezer for up to a month.
- Blend when ready.
Try it yourself!
