Gymnast Suni Lee is showing support for friend and fellow gymnast Simone Biles as well as other Team USA gymnasts who came forward last week to speak at a U.S. Senate hearing about how the FBI handled its investigation of disgraced gymnastics coach Larry Nassar.
The 18-year-old, who was the 2020 Olympic all-around champion and uneven bars bronze medalist at the Tokyo Games, showed appreciation for Biles, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney, and Maggie Nichols during an appearance on PEOPLE (the TV Show!) this week.
"We're all very proud of her. That's something that's very difficult to talk about and not very many can use their voice,” Lee said of Biles, adding: "We're all very proud of Simone and proud of all of the girls for coming out, and they just continue to be an inspiration every day.”
Last week, Biles was near tears when she shared with lawmakers that she felt that the FBI, U.S. gymnastics, and Olympic officials all failed to stop the sexual abuse proliferated by Nassar on herself and hundreds of other athletes.
"To be clear, I blame Larry Nassar and I also blame an entire system that enabled and perpetrated his abuse,” Biles told the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.
Biles also lambasted USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee for failing to act while the FBI "turned a blind eye,” as per Reuters.
"I don't want another young gymnast, Olympic athlete or any individual to experience the horror that I and hundreds of others have endured before, during and continuing to this day, in the wake … of the Larry Nassar abuse," said Biles at the hearing.
The hearing comes in the wake of a July report by the Justice Department's Inspector General Michael Horowitz, which claimed the FBI botched its investigation into Nassar, who was sentenced in 2018 to up to 175 years “after pleading guilty to seven counts of criminal sexual conduct.” He is currently serving his sentence in the U.S. penitentiary in Sumterville, Florida.
