Sunisa Lee Makes History With ‘Dream Come True’ Gymnastics Win at Olympics

Sunisa Lee gold medal 2021 Olympics

U.S. gymnast Sunisa Lee just made history when she took home the gold medal for women’s individual all-around gymnastics at the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday. She is the first Hmong-American athlete to win gold on the Olympic stage.

The 18-year-old from Minnesota is the fifth straight American to nab the gold medal in the all-around Olympic final, following in teammate Simone Biles' footsteps after she took home the gold at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Biles had been preceded by Gabby Douglas in London in 2012, Nastia Liukin in Beijing in 2008, and Carly Patterson in Athens, Greece, in 2004.

Lee was the highest-qualifying U.S. gymnast for the all-around final after Biles, who notably dropped out of the competition earlier this week in an effort to focus on her mental health.
Scoring a whopping 57.433 points, Lee took the gold over Rebeca Andrade of Brazil, who won silver, and Angelina Melnikova of Russia, who nabbed the bronze.

In response, many praised her win for both the American and the Hmong communities. Lee also spoke out on social media about how happy she was to win and even shared a video of her loved ones' reactions on Twitter.

″[T]he people i do it all for,” she wrote.“I LOVE YOU ALL.”

She also posted a snapshot on Instagram of herself kissing her medal and writing in the caption: “OLYMPIC ALL-AROUND CHAMPION. So surreal. I can’t thank you all enough for the love and support. thank you to everyone who has believed in me and never gave up on me. this is a dream come true 😭💕WE DID IT.”

Biles also congratulated her teammate on social media with a special Instagram shoutout. In addition to posting a video of a pleased Lee with her medal at their hotel, she also shared a photo of herself and Lee taking a selfie together with the caption: “OLYMPIC CHAMPION RIGHT HERE !!! So so so beyond proud of you!!!!”
