Singer Tony Bennett made Grammy Awards history on Tuesday when he became the oldest artist to have ever been nominated in a “general field” category. He also became the second oldest nominee overall in the history of the show.

Bennett was honored with the nominations alongside Lady Gaga for their album, Love for Sale. The pair received five nominations, including album of the year, pop duo/group performance, traditional pop vocal album, music video, and record of the year for I Get a Kick Out of You.

The news of the history-making nominations comes in the wake of Bennett breaking a Guinness World Record in September as the the oldest person to release an album of new material at 95 years and 57 days old.

As for his Grammy trailblazing, the only person to have been older than Bennett to win the award is Pinetop Perkins, a pianist who won for traditional blues album in 2011 at 97 years old.
Bennett is notably not a newbie to the Grammy Awards, having collected 20 of them over the course of his more than half a century-long career. His first was in 1963, for his iconic song I Left My Heart in San Francisco. He also collected a statue for the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.

The nonagenarian’s happy news is a bright spot in what has been a difficult year for the crooner. In February, he revealed to AARP magazine that he’d been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2016. The disease has been slowly taking its toll and led to Bennett retiring from performing in August. His son, Danny, told Variety that it was a “hard decision” to cancel Bennett’s remaining 2021 tour dates, but it was on "doctors' orders.”
