Camping Is the Best Budget Vacation

I’ve been on some amazing vacations — from all-inclusive resorts on islands to stays at some of the best 5-star hotels in the country. But some of my favorite vacations both as a child and as an adult have been the budget-friendly camping trips I’ve taken with my family.

I may not have had anyone cleaning up after me or cooking for me while camping, but the memories made with my loved ones while sitting around a campfire in our sweatpants are more valuable than any luxury a more expensive vacation could offer.

Camping trips are wonderful for a number of reasons, but I think what I love most about them is that they provide uninterrupted, quality time. That is hard to come by nowadays, between sports, school activities, and work. Camping days and nights are often unscheduled with plenty of time to talk as we sit around roasting marshmallows, playing board games, or having whispered conversations, as everyone drifts off to sleep. Camping trips are also mostly tech-free, which means everyone can really focus on each other, since they aren’t distracted by screens.

Camping is the only vacation that my family is taking this summer — and I can’t wait. We are staying in a cabin, so this trip will allow us to get out of our house but still be able to continue the social distancing that we need to be doing right now.

It also gets bonus points for being one of the cheapest ways to explore different places, since we don’t have to spend money on a hotel, pay for activities at our destination, or eat out at restaurants. Campgrounds usually have a number of free activities families can participate in, but it’s also nice to just slow down and take that elusive nap or enjoy each other’s company as we relax around the fire.
