Lobster Rolls: a Gourmet Meal at Home

This post is part of a month-long August series in which we asked writers to share their favorite sandwich recipes with us to celebrate National Sandwich Month.

Lobster rolls are a classic summer staple all along the coast of New England. Every restaurant and clam shack has a version on its menu. There’s nothing better than a fresh-caught lobster cooked and tossed with a few simple ingredients, served on a split-top roll. Some family friends started lobster fishing a few years ago and will bring over a cooler full of their catch a few times throughout the summer. While there are plenty of ways to cook it and eat it, lobster rolls are my absolute favorite seafood dish to make at home. They are surprisingly easy to prepare, require few ingredients, and can transform any mealtime into a gourmet experience.

Two years ago, my husband and I got married in our backyard in Massachusetts, surrounded by only our immediate families, who'd traveled from Chicago and Canada. For our rehearsal dinner, we had an epic meal of fresh seafood, the highlight of which was warm lobster rolls we cooked for our guests. That homemade dinner was actually better than the catered wedding meal the next day!

The fantastic thing about lobster rolls is the simplicity of the ingredients. Lobster meat is sautéed in garlic and butter, tossed with a little mayonnaise and fresh chopped celery, then loaded onto a toasted split-top bun and garnished with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and a sprinkle of chives. Each bite of the warm creamy filling, crisp fresh vegetables, and buttery toasted bun is pure New England summer.

Homemade lobster rolls are perfect for a fancy special-occasion dinner, anniversary, birthday, or just for an at-home date night. This summer I’ve been doing a lot more cooking at home than eating out, but that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy a decadent lobster roll just like I’d get at a restaurant. Fresh lobster, a few humble ingredients, and a toasted roll are all it takes to bring a five-star meal right to your kitchen.
