Perhaps no savory pie combo is more classic and timeless than steak and mushroom. Though this hearty pie is best served at dinner, leftovers can be used for breakfast alongside some fluffy eggs.

Makes 8 servings Prep Time: 20 minutes, Cook Time: 2 hours

  • 2 lb stewing beef
  • 2 tbsp. olive oil
  • ΒΌ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. pepper
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 stalks celery, chopped
  • 2 large carrots, chopped
  • 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 sprigs fresh thyme
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 lb mushtooms, sliced
  • 1 - 2 puff pastry sheets
  • 1 egg yolk

  1. Start by seasoning and tossing your beef in flour before transferring it to an Instant Pot or crockpot with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and set to saute.
  2. Remove the beef and place it on a separate plate once all pieces are browned.
  3. Next, add the onion, garlic, celery, and carrots and saute for 5 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle your veggies with two tablespoons of flour and stir before pouring in the wine and beef broth.
  5. Add bay leaves, thyme, and beef into the pot and cook on high for 35 minutes.
  6. In a separate pan, saute your mushrooms for five minutes and season with salt and pepper.
  7. Remove the bay leaves and thyme from the pot and add mushrooms.
  8. Switch the pot back to saute setting and allow everything to cook for 10 minutes.
  9. As that simmers, preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  10. Finally, pour your stew into a casserole dish and top with your sheet of puff pastry.
  11. Brush with egg yolk and bake for 35 minutes or until golden brown.
  12. Allow the pie to rest for 5 minutes before enjoying it.
