Living a sustainable lifestyle is undeniably important, but the task of changing the way we are so accustomed to living can seem daunting. The good news is: eco-friendly household items have never been easier to come by or more attractive. Here are a few ideas to get you started in swapping your everyday household items for earth-friendly options. After you make a few simple swaps, you’ll realize how manageable it can be to live a sustainable lifestyle.

1Laundry Detergent Sheets

These waterless laundry detergent sheets come in small, compact packaging, so you no longer need to buy large plastic jugs of detergent, which end up in our landfills or polluting the ocean. One small package of these sheets cleans 60 loads of laundry and does the job just as well as traditional detergent. Plus, each purchase provides 10 donated loads of detergent to a charity or nonprofit organization.

2Wool Dryer Balls

We love fluffy, wrinkle-free laundry as much as the next person, but it can come at a cost when using dryer sheets. These eco-friendly, reusable wool dryer balls will have the same wrinkle-fighting and fluffing effect on your laundry without the use of chemicals and toxins.

3Glass Spray Bottles

Instead of repeatedly buying cleaning solution in plastic bottles, only to throw them out when the bottle is empty, try using these stylish and reusable glass bottles. They can be filled with your own homemade vinegar solution or with a cleaning solution concentrate made with earth-friendly ingredients. Plus, aren’t the non-slip silicone sleeves so pretty?

4Green Cleaning Solution Concentrate

The toxins and chemicals that are often found in traditional cleaning solutions are not only bad for the planet, but bad for your health. This all-purpose cleaning solution uses only clean ingredients. One 16 ounce bottle of this concentrate will provide one gallon of cleaning solution – that’s enough to fill your glass spray bottle eight times!

5Biodegradable Snack Bags

Convenience is hard to pass up when it comes to making changes for a sustainable lifestyle. With these biodegradable snack bags, you won’t have to sacrifice convenience for sustainability. These baggies work just as well as the plastic version and can be washed for multiple uses before being composted.

6Washable Mop Pads

A swiffer can be an incredibly efficient cleaning tool, but once you realize how many cleaning sheets you go through in a month, their efficiency is quickly outweighed by wastefulness. To remedy this, use these washable mop pads instead and you will greatly reduce your environmental impact.

7Unpaper Towels

Paper towels are one of the most useful products in any home, but did you know it takes 51,000 trees per day to keep up with North America’s paper towel addiction? Swapping these paper goods with a cloth version is a simple answer to a big problem. These “unpaper” towels are made from organic cotton and can handle any mess better than its paper counterpart.

8Organic Wax Wraps

These reusable organic beeswax food wraps are the perfect alternative to plastic wrap or tin foil. Save your leftovers in a glass or ceramic container or wrap up your sandwich, veggies, fruit – pretty much anything –  in one of these beautiful wraps. They come in an assortment of sizes and are easily cleaned with soap and water.

9Bamboo Cutting Board

Bamboo is a highly renewable resource that is naturally antimicrobial and antifungal in addition to being biodegradable. This bamboo cutting board has a beautiful two tone design with a groove one one side for easy cleanup. Add this item to your collection of kitchen tools and your one step close to living in a sustainable home.

10Cast Iron or Stainless Steel Cookware

Nonstick cookware is notoriously toxic for you and the planet. Plus, the lifespan of nonstick cookware is only a few years, which means it inevitably ends up in a landfill. Making the switch to cast iron or stainless steel cookware is an investment upfront, but it will last you a lifetime in the kitchen. We love the enameled cast iron cookware by Le Creuset which is naturally a nonstick material.
