Boppy Recalls Millions Of Infant Loungers After 8 Babies Died

Parents of newborns will want to be aware that the Boppy Company recalled more than 3 million loungers after several infant suffocation deaths were linked to the item.

In a post issued on their site on Thursday, the company and the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that they’d be recalling products such as the Boppy Original Newborn Lounger, the Boppy Preferred Newborn Lounger, and the Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Lounger “to address a risk of infant suffocation.”

“Infants can suffocate if they roll, move, or are placed on the lounger in a position that obstructs breathing, or roll off the lounger onto an external surface, such as an adult pillow or soft bedding, that obstructs breathing,” reads the post. 

It goes on to add that “there have been eight reports of infant deaths associated with The Boppy Company Newborn Lounger and this hazard.”

“The infants reportedly suffocated after being placed on their back, side, or stomach on the lounger and were found on their side or on their stomach. The infant deaths occurred between December 2015 and June 2020,” the post explained.

The post also shared that Boppy “sold about 3.3 million of the recalled loungers at juvenile product stores and mass merchandisers nationwide and online” and that CPSC says “the best place for a baby to sleep is on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet, or play yard.”

“Parents and caregivers should never add blankets, pillows, padded crib bumpers, or other items to an infant’s sleeping environment. Babies should always be placed to sleep on their backs,” it warns.

Of the recall, a Boppy spokesperson told BuzzFeed that the company is "devastated" at the deaths of children and emphasized that their lounger "was not marketed as an infant sleep product and includes warnings against unsupervised use.”
