Elizabeth Debicki will play Princess Diana in the upcoming seasons of The Crown.

On Sunday, the official Twitter account for the royals-centric show announced that the Australian actress, who is known for films such as Widows and The Great Gatsby, will play the “people’s princess” in the final few seasons.

“Princess Diana’s spirit, her words, and her actions live in the hearts of so many,” said Debicki in the statement shared on social media. “It is my true privilege and honor to be joining this masterful series, which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one.”

The critically-acclaimed series is known for recasting the actors and actresses portraying the members of the House of Windsor every few seasons to properly depict them as they age. Currently, Emma Corrin is slated to play Diana Spencer in the show’s upcoming fourth season. Debicki will take on Spencer in seasons five and six.

Based on how the third season ended, with Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1977, it’s likely Diana will appear early in the season as she and Charles met that same year. It’s still unclear how old Diana will be when Debicki takes the reins from Corrin, so we’ll just have to watch and see.

Earlier this year, the show’s writer and creator Peter Morgan announced that the show would come to an end after season five. In July, Morgan changed his tune and said the show would run an additional season.

“As we started to discuss the story lines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons,” said Morgan in a statement to the New York Times. “To be clear, Series 6 will not bring us any closer to present day — it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.”
