Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union say that their daughter Zaya is helping them be the best allies they can be to the LGBTQ+ community.

Last week, the couple presented the award for Outstanding Drama Series at the GLAAD Media Awards and used some of their time onstage to honor their 13-year-old (Zaya is Wade's daughter from a previous marriage; Union is Zaya's stepmother).

"We stand as allies with the LGBTQ+ community as proud parents of a transgender child. Our daughter Zaya is leading us in our journey, and we’re doing all we can to give every one of our kids the ability to live their truth,” shared Wade.

"I didn’t always understand how to do that – but I thank Zaya for teaching me, and GLAAD for elevating the images and messages that accelerate acceptance in every family.”

The award went to the cast of Pose, which holds special meaning to the NBA star and actress. The pair — who have been outspoken in their support for their trans daughter — reached out to the cast after Zaya told them she was trans.

In a February interview posted on YouTube, Wade told Ellen DeGeneres what the conversation was like with their daughter when she came out as trans.

“Once, Zaya, our 12-year-old, came home ... and said: 'Hey, I want to talk to you guys. You know, I think going forward I'm ready to live my truth, and I want to be referenced as 'she' and 'her.' I would love for you guys to call me Zaya,' " said Wade, who went on to share that it was now his time to "go out and get information, to reach out to every relationship that we have,” which prompted Union to contact Pose stars.

Wade also told DeGeneres that he and Union are “just trying to figure out as much information as we can to make sure that we give our child the best opportunity to be, you know, her best self.”
