First lady Jill Biden made history this week when she resumed teaching on Tuesday at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA).

The 70-year-old wife of President Joe Biden has taught at the school since 2009 and had been teaching writing and English virtually throughout much of the pandemic. She’s the first FLOTUS to work a full-time job in tandem with acting as first lady.

Biden, who goes by Dr. B, is slated to teach this semester on Tuesdays and Thursdays and has been outspoken about her desire to stay in the classroom throughout her husband’s presidency.

During President Biden’s tenure as vice president under former President Barack Obama, Jill Biden taught at the Virginia community college all eight years.

“I’m a full-time teacher and, like most teachers, teaching isn’t just what I do — it’s who I am,” she once said, via her husband’s Twitter page, in 2012.

Of her return to the classroom, Press Secretary Michael LaRosa told CNN that Dr. B is “looking forward to teaching and communicating in person rather than through the screen.” The pandemic has obviously drastically changed how teachers have functioned in recent years and even amid the return to classrooms, those changes continue. Virginia’s Community Colleges require that all “visitors, students, faculty and staff” wear face masks while “in indoor public spaces on our campuses and at other VCCS properties (including the system office and Shared Services Center),” regardless of vaccination status.

Earlier this week, Biden penned an impassioned essay about being an educator and the importance of educators in such a moment in time. The essay, featured in Time Magazine, is titled Jill Biden: A Tribute to Classroom Heroes and has Biden imploring fellow teachers to “always remember that right now, someone out there is a better thinker because of you.”

“Someone is standing a little taller because you helped her find the confidence she needed. People are kinder because you showed them what that meant. Your strength and resilience, your creativity and kindness, are changing lives and changing the world,” she wrote. “Our work has never been more seen. As our President sets the course of our country, there is an educator standing right beside him.”
