John Travolta on Dancing With Princess Diana: It Was 'a Fairytale'

In a recent interview, John Travolta recalled the time he danced with Princess Diana —and the story sounds like it was taken out of a movie.

The 67-year-old actor sat down with Esquire Mexico and spoke candidly about dancing with the Princess of Wales at a 1985 White House state dinner hosted by then-President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan.

"I didn't expect to be asked to dance with her," explained Travolta in the interview published this week. "I had the great privilege and honor to do so. And I thought: 'There must be a reason to do this and I better give it my all ...'. This meant guiding the dance well and seeking to have fun. That was the easy part, but introducing myself to Diana in the proper way, conveying assurance, and asking her to be my dance partner was a complicated mission."

Travolta then compared the moment to a "fairytale" and said he made the effort to "stamp" it into his "memory as a very special, magical moment."

"Think of the setting. We were at the White House. It's midnight. The stage is like a dream. I approach her, touch her elbow, invite her to dance. She spins around and gives me that captivating smile, just a little sad, and accepts my invitation. And there we were, dancing together as if it were a fairytale," he said. "Who could ever imagine something like that would happen to them someday? I was smart enough to stamp it in my memory as a very special, magical moment."

Travolta has previously spoken out about his moment with Diana with just as much reverence in other interviews. In 2016, he told Good Morning America that it was the one moment from the 1980s that he'd like to bring back to the 2010s.

"Yes, I danced with Princess Diana in 1986, I believe," he said. "That was one of the highlights of my life, so that's probably the best moment of the '80s."
