Kate Middleton Will Have a Different Title When Charles Becomes King

Kate Middleton may not be the Duchess of Cambridge too much longer.

As any Anglophile and/or Royals obsessive knows, upon those closest to the throne aging and eventually dying, the titles for those who have continued to ascend shift.

Upon her marriage to Prince William ten years ago, Kate Middleton was given a series of names by Queen Elizabeth. Those names include Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn, and Lady Carrickfergus.

Queen Elizabeth is currently 95 years old, making her the longest-living and longest-reigning British monarch, the longest-serving female head of state in world history, the world's oldest living monarch, the longest-reigning current monarch, and oldest and longest-serving current head of state. But, a hard truth is that when she passes on, her son Prince Charles will become the King of England.

Notably, upon Charles' death, Prince William — Charles' son with the late Princess Diana — will become king.

So what does this all mean for Kate? Well, as Prince Charles becomes king, Prince William's rank will shift. Currently the Duke of Cambridge, he'll ascend and become the new Prince of Wales meaning Kate will become the new Princess of Wales.

William's mother, Princess Diana, last held that very title and it could have been passed down to Camilla Parker Bowles, who went on to marry Charles after his divorce from Diana. Bowles elected to turn down the title out of respect for Diana and is currently known as the Duchess of Cornwall.

Should William become king in the future, Kate's name will change once again and she'll be known as the "queen consort."  Royal expert and commentator Marlene Koenig told Insider last year that while Middleton will be known as Queen Catherine, she's not connected by blood to the throne. As such, as consort, "there is no real constitutional role for a consort, just by tradition.  She will be the first lady of the land, in terms of precedence," says Koenig.
