Lili Reinhart talked candidly about what propelled her to come out as a bisexual woman this year. In a recent interview, she said she made the decision, in part, because she did not want to be vilified by the media or accused of faking her sexuality.

This month, the 23-year-old spoke to fashion publication Flaunt and shared that she was inspired to come out as bisexual amid the current cultural climate. In the wake of the police killing of George Floyd and subsequent Black Lives Matter protests, Reinhart explained that the solidarity of those protests in tandem with the support of the LGBTQ+ community led her to feel ready to speak out.

“It was incredible to be surrounded by so many people who are actively fighting against the injustices that are happening right now,” she said. “Enough is enough and hopefully we’ll see real change from the actions that are now being taken."

The Riverdale star went on to say that she’s known from a “young age” that she was attracted to women, adding, “I felt that since I’ve exclusively been in hetero-normative relationships, it would be too easy for any outsider, especially the media, to vilify me and accuse me of faking it to get attention. That’s not something I wanted to deal with. But to my close friends, and those in my life, my bisexuality has been no secret.”

Reinhart came out publicly as bisexual in an Instagram Story in June. She shared that she was at an LGBTQ+ for Black Lives Matter protest in West Hollywood in California and beneath a snapshot of a poster for the march, she wrote, "Although I've never announced it publicly before, I am a proud bisexual woman. And I will be joining this protest today. Come join."

The actress had been in a longtime relationship with Riverdale co-star, Cole Sprouse, up until earlier this year. People reported in May that the on-and-off couple parted ways.
