Malala Yousafzai is married!

The activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner announced that she had celebrated her marriage to Asser Malik this week in emotional posts on both Instagram and Twitter.

“Today marks a precious day in my life. Asser and I tied the knot to be partners for life. We celebrated a small nikkah ceremony at home in Birmingham with our families. Please send us your prayers. We are excited to walk together for the journey ahead,” she wrote on both platforms, sharing an assortment of photos from the nuptials with her millions of followers.

The 24-year-old rose to global prominence for her activism against the Taliban, who banned girls from attending school in her native Pakistan. In the midst of her actively speaking on behalf of women having a right to education, Yousafzai was shot in an assassination attempt. After her recovery, she spent time with many world leaders, celebrities, and fellow activists to further raise awareness for her advocacy.

Yousafzai’s husband, Malik, is an “operations manager for the Pakistan Cricket Board and from the city of Lahore,” as per CNN.

The announcement of the wedding comes in the wake of the young woman speaking candidly about relationships and marriage to British Vogue earlier this year. In July, Yousafzai said she wasn’t sure if she’d ever get married.

“I still don’t understand why people have to get married. If you want to have a person in your life, why do you have to sign marriage papers, why can’t it just be a partnership?” she said, before divulging that her father sometimes receives messages from suitors for his daughter in Pakistan.

Of those boys, Yousafzai recalled that one told her father “he has many acres of land and many houses and would love to marry me.”

It’s unclear how she and Malik met and if it was via email, but either way, congrats to the happy couple!
