A new Miss Universe has been crowned, and her stance on climate change will renew your faith in humanity.

On Sunday, Harnaaz Sandhu of India was honored with the title of Miss Universe 2021 and was crowned by Miss Universe 2020 Andrea Meza from Mexico. At the 70th annual event in Eilat, Israel, Sandhu beat out 79 women from around the globe and took the crown ahead of fellow finalists Miss South Africa Lalela Mswane and Miss Paraguay Nadia Ferreira. Upon her win, she shouted "Chak de Phatte India!" which is a Punjabi exclamation that most closely translates to: "Let's do this, India!"

The 21-year-old model, who hails from Chandigarh, had been pursuing a master’s degree in public administration prior to being named Miss Universe. Outside of this win, she was previously crowned Miss Diva Universe 2021 and Femina Miss India Punjab in 2019. She was also a semifinalist at Femina Miss India 2019.

During the Miss Universe pageant this year, CNN reported that Sandhu implored young people to "know that you are unique and that's what makes you beautiful, stop comparing yourself to others.”

Sandhu’s shining moment during the pageant was her response to a question about climate change. When asked how she would change the mind of someone who told her they believed climate change is a hoax, she said:

“Honestly, my heart breaks to see how nature is going through a lot of problems, and it’s all due to our irresponsible behavior. I totally feel like this is the time to take actions and talk less, because each action could either kill or save nature. Prevent and protect is better than repent and repair, and this is what I’m trying to convince you guys to do. Thank you.”

We couldn’t agree more, Harnaaz!
