4 Ways To Boost Your Self-Confidence

More than 10 years ago I stood in front of more than 120 people and gave a 30-minute presentation about a project I was leading at work. I had an upset stomach all morning. My palms and armpits were sweating, my fingers were shaking, I could feel my heart thumping through my chest. It was the longest 30 minutes of my life.

Now, I speak to thousands on social media, have been featured as a guest expert on a TV show, and look forward to the day where I get to give a TED Talk about shattering divorce stigma.

"The biggest difference between me now versus 10 years ago is my self-confidence."

Some people believe you’re born with self-confidence, while others say it's a muscle you can build. I believe it's never too late to nurture and build confidence that comes from within.

Here are four exercises that have helped me set more goals, take more action, achieve more, learn more, live more, and ultimately become a more confident version of myself. I hope you find value in them, too.

1Create an Accomplishment Log

Our brains are good at dismissing what we have accomplished and focus, instead, on the areas where we may have faltered. I keep a running log of accomplishments and refer to it on the days when I'm feeling deflated. This includes a range of accomplishments, from personal to professional pursuits.

2Dress To Impress (You)

The clothes we wear affect how we feel, how we behave, and the way we perceive ourselves. Scientists call this “enclothed cognition.” If you want an instant confidence boost, switch up your wardrobe. For example, if you normally wear sweatpants or leggings, try on a skirt or dress. If your go-to shoes are sneakers, consider wearing boots or heels. 3Challenge Yourself Daily

Do something every day that scares you or requires you to get over a fear. The more you do things that you’re not comfortable doing, the more confident you’ll become. Some ideas include: asking for a raise, public speaking, wearing a sexy outfit — even texting a love interest first.

4Dance Like a Diva

Music is a great tool to quickly elevate your mood and get you out of your head and into your body. Curate a “pick-me-up” playlist with songs you can't resist dancing to. For me, this includes reggaeton, Bollywood, hip-hop, classic rock, and modern pop. Turn up the volume to drown out any thoughts of doubt, and to help you get your best self groove on.

Bottom Line

Implement these exercises to challenge yourself to begin growing new — and stronger — "muscles" of confidence.
