Even Influencers Need Social Media Breaks, Too

Over a year ago, I made the decision to launch my own beauty blog on Instagram as an outlet to discuss with others my love for skin care. What started out as a hobby quickly led to over 3,000 followers.

While I’m not a major influencer by any means, I’ve had the opportunity to meet amazing people on the platform, work with skin-care brands, and continue to share this little passion of mine with others.

Growing my platform in the first half of the year was amazing, although, along with it, I noticed my use of social media had increased significantly. While not my proudest moment, I decided to ignore it. After all, I was seeing results and doing everything I could to continue growing.

It wasn’t until earlier this year when I finally reached a stage of burnout with my social media usage, something I started to expect would come sooner or later.

Finding the Power to Step Back

The burnout was a result of a few things, although the biggest factor was that I had let the increase in followers motivate me rather than my passion itself. It was then that I realized I needed to step back and evaluate these feelings.

While the burnout was hard to deal with, I found the power within me to take a step back from social media and take a break from posting as frequently as I was at first. However, the thoughts that I was feeling as a result of taking a break were much more of a concern for me.

Looking back, there are a few things that come to mind. For one, I had developed a sense of guilt from stepping back from social media, especially for my followers. What were the people that I engaged with daily going to think not seeing me on the platform as frequently? Would I lose the followers that I worked so hard for?

Second, I felt the need to constantly apologize to my followers for not posting as much, while making promises to them I knew I couldn’t fulfill.

I knew the importance of my break would make coming back to the platform a lot stronger and easier for me. I deleted the app from my phone for a few days, fought through the urge to keep checking my account, and instantly felt a lot better mentally once my little hiatus was over.

Sometimes taking a mental break from social media is the reminder you need to focus on what truly matters. Your mental health should always come first, even if the thoughts in your head are convincing you otherwise. Yes, the connections that I’ve made on my account have been incredibly meaningful to me; however, I realize that with a strong mind, I can continue to give my full attention to these friendships further down the line.

If you’re struggling with the same thoughts and feelings as a social media user in general, this is your sign to take that much needed break! Your mind will thank you, and your relationship with social media will be a lot healthier if you give yourself the space to step away from it however often you need to.
