How To Get a Raise/ Promotion With Less Face Time

Fully remote or hybrid workplace setups offer so much flexibility, and many women have found the options beneficial. Taking a conference call in your PJs may be appealing, but you might not want to keep your camera off for every meeting. Less in-person interaction could mean more work on your end if you want a promotion or a raise.

Luckily, some strategies help women stand out in remote and hybrid workplaces. We spoke with Mimi Paul, a system operations employee at recruitment company Starkflow, where she’s involved in HR-related tasks, hiring, and content management. She advises leveraging your time to ensure your efforts are being seen and heard in any company setup.

1Advocate For Yourself

In the past, it may have been easier for your boss to see the efforts you put into your role while interacting with you at the office. Now that the workplace setup is different, you need to start advocating for yourself and the things you’ve accomplished.  

Paul states that it’s important to “continue to be consistent with your exceptional performance” but that by sharing the significant wins and showing your support, “you can create a reputation for yourself in the team as a good performer.” 

2Make a Constant Effort To Be Seen and Heard

Ensure that you’re fully participating in video chats and collaborative screen time. “Make sure that your manager and colleagues notice you in video calls,” Paul suggests, which means keeping that camera on and speaking up appropriately. 

For those who are fully remote but have the option to visit an office, Paul suggests making the occasional work trip to have in-person interaction time.

3Make Sure Your Boss Knows What Tasks You Are Up To

“If you’re worried that your manager is forgetting your work contributions, remind them,” Paul tells CircleAround. “Send a daily or weekly status report of how you spent your workday, and what you accomplished.” 

You can keep the content of the reports light; the existence of the reports themselves is what’s important, serving as a record of how you’re positively contributing to the company, which can be used to support your raise or promotion request.

4Present Your Workplace Wins

“Keep a detailed track record of all your past achievements and recent accomplishments,” Paul states. “This information is what you should share with your boss when asking for a raise, as nothing speaks louder than data and facts.”

5Ask For Raise In Person

Face-to-face salary negotiation is always best, and Paul notes that a video call also works if you’re unable to be in the same place as your boss. “Send an email in advance stating that you would like to discuss the compensation package for your role, and ask for a convenient time to chat. Spend time before the meeting practicing what you're going to say.”

6Keep The Negotiation Focused On Your Skills, Accomplishments, And Growth

Money is important, of course, but your company will be more apt to approve your request if you can point out what you have achieved, the skills you have learned, and how your role supports the growth of the company overall.

Paul also notes not to shy away from any milestones or up-skilling you’ve learned in the process. 

7Time To Get Started

Working remotely or in hybrid mode can be more challenging for women, but with a few key strategies, you can ensure that you’re making the most out of your role and salary. Your efforts deserve to be noticed, so take time to document your accomplishments, keep showing up and speaking up, and your chances of getting what you ask will increase.
