She Creates ‘Happy Interiors’ Through Sustainable Design

Miami-based interior designer Marcy Garcia always knew she wanted to create positive change in her industry. To do this, the Colombia native developed her own firm, MG Design Lab, where she creates designs that are both beautiful and eco-friendly.

“I create what I like to call ‘Happy Interiors’,” Garcia explains. “It’s the marriage between my personal and company's philosophy and commitment to sustainability, with the physiology of mindfulness and the scientific-based research of human health and wellness inside the built environment.”

Garcia, an accredited Green AP Designer and Interior Architect, focuses on biophilic design — the practice of incorporating natural elements into built spaces. She believes her eco-friendly aesthetic not only helps the environment, but also the well-being of her clients.

“We have never been as disconnected from nature as we are today,” Garcia tells CircleAround. “With the technological advancements and connectivity that is available for us, it’s not surprising that so much of our time is spent indoors.”

From her own experiences, Garcia feels that being in nature can positively affect a person’s health in many ways, including reducing stress. “Interacting with natural elements is also linked to better immunity, mood, and productivity,” she adds. “Biophilic design is now needed more than ever.”

Garcia seeks to create innovative ways to bring in more natural light to a room, placing windows in parts of the home with inspiring views and using color palettes inspired by nature. She’s successfully integrated this philosophy into many different spaces, from one-bedroom homes for newlyweds to large-scale corporate offices. She says much of her biophilic designs are inspired by her experience living in San Francisco, where nature, simplicity, warmth, sustainability, and wellness are all intertwined on a daily basis.

For those who aren’t able to invest in a sustainably focused interior designer, Garcia has a few simple tips: look for materials made from natural fibers (like cotton or wool), purchase items secondhand to reduce waste, and incorporate more plants into your home space, especially for those living in more urban areas.

“My holistic approach to design is making the service I provide better,” she adds. Garcia is also learning more about Scandinavian design, a region that is home to some of the most eco-friendly, sustainable countries in the world.

Garcia draws strength from the challenging experiences she’s had in the past decade. “I am Latina, and on a constant basis, I have issues with people not believing I am who I am, and I do what I do for a living,” she explains. “I had a lot of people, including the owner of the last firm I worked at, that told me I could never be a businesswoman.

“I am petite and friendly, and people tend to underestimate that I just don't fluff pillows,” she continues. “I own a business that provides value.”

As she continues to educate herself and her clients on the benefits of biophilic design, Garcia knows the potential to impact the interior design industry is limitless. “I have made many mistakes in the years I have been in business, but every one of them has taken me to where I am now and gives me the strength to keep growing,” she says. “My willingness to succeed, to look beyond the obvious, and [my] resourcefulness come from this philosophy.”
